ABOUT MARMARI

Night view of Marmari

Marmari has about 1000 permanent residents, I am one of them, and belongs (now, after the last municipal merger) to Karystos municipality. The village's name lives on from ancient times when marble was quarried in the area which was exported from a port where Marmari is today. The ancient Roman marble quarries can still be visited.

Marmari Harbour

Today, the village survives mainly on the export of another stone - slate, and on agriculture and fishing. The tourist industry is, despite the proximity to Athens, very sparingly developed. Here you won't find any all-inclusive resorts, Swedish bars or drinkers in the taverns. And no souvenir shops at all! It is also not entirely easy to get by in "foreign" languages. If you avoid the two weeks around August 15 when the Greeks themselves are on vacation, you usually have the beaches around Marmari to yourself. And there are many to choose from!

In the village, there are 8-9 tavernas on the promenade that serve locally produced food of the highest quality. The area is well known for high-quality meat and fish. Nightlife stands for 5 - 6 bars plus an open Summer Club between Marmari and Karystos. Petalouda Summer Club.

In the village, there are also 5 hotels, 3 supermarkets, 2 bakeries, 2 meat shops, 2 fish shops, pharmacy, petrol station, post office, electrical shop, paper shop, hardware store, advice agent, clothes shop, ATM, 2 cigarette kiosks, 2 knick-knack shops, 2 churches, local municipality office, citizen's office, port office, hardware store, local museum, dentist, doctor's office, broker, two cemeteries, soccer field, school, an accountant, a Notary public! and 6 cafes. That was probably all? These are open all year round. Don't ask me how it works (I know but it's quite complicated to explain). However, the police and harbor police offices are closed!

Karystos, which is 12 km away, is a nice little Greek-looking provincial town (approx. 5,000 inhab.) with a larger selection of restaurants, shops and nightlife. There is a bus connection between Marmari and Karystos in connection with every ferry that comes to Marmari. From Karystos there is a bus to the capital on Evia - Chalkida.
